For project three we were assigned to explore different genres based of our previously assigned project based off our own research. Through all the genres and ways of spreading awareness of my topic of Netflix and its costumer satisfaction as well as statistics, I chose to target college students specifically. Most college students have different forms of social media and use them in different ways. For example, Facebook to stay in touch with all friends, twitter to state opinions and read others opinions including celebrities, etc. I chose Tumblr, Buzzfeed and an infographic poster to relay my messages about Netflix.
Tumblr is a social media site similar to a blog and is a genre that all parties are extremely expressive of their thoughts as well as accepting other users thoughts and opinions on topics using text, gifs, video, photos, sound and more. This site allows you to re-blog other people’s posts as well as comment on them. I chose to make a Tumblr going through some negative effects of Netflix like how they remove shows as well as some downsides to the network relating to other countries Netflix programs. My second genre is a Buzzfeed list as entertainment. Buzzfeed is a media company that makes entertaining videos, memes and lists about popular culture and to entertain their fan base. Buzzfeed’s main audience is the same audience I am targeting which is college students and young adults. I created a list of ten items including memes, photos and gifs going through the emotions a college student using Netflix will experience for example, the first emotion is when someone finishes their favorite series and there is a screenshot of a snapchat of someone crying with the caption “idk what to do now”. The remainder of the list is all similar but go through all emotions like happiness, laughter, and greave. The last emotion is when Netflix removes the users favorite show and I added a gif of a Netflix character crying. My final genre was an info graphic poster with the two links to my Tumbler blog as well as my Buzz feed list, which is on my account on Buzzfeed. The info graphic gives the audience the idea of what my project regards as well as what the two links will provide them. The heading of the poster is “The Worst of Netflix for Viewers”. I think this title gives a general idea prior to reading or opening the links. I posted this info graph to my Tumbler as well as my personal Facebook page.
Some choices I made transferring my project two to this project was mainly deciding which portions on Netflix I thought its users would like to learn more about and in an interesting and easily accessible way. I promoted through my personal social media accounts posting both the info graph and Buzzfeed link on my Tumblr then posting all three to my personal Facebook and Tumblr page.
For this project I rhetorically used ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos through trying to logically show the process and they way Netflix works with adding and removing shows and the ethical appeal it has to its audiences. I used Pathos through emotional appeal in my Buzzfeed list, and finally I incorporated logos through logic in my Tumblr by re-blogging other people who felt similar to the way I did and continuing to prove my point and persuading the audience to agree with me, although there is not much convincing due to people feeling the same as I did about the topic. This project is definitely more difficult than others assigned in this coarse due to the fact that I am not social media famous, nor do a lot of people follow and befriend someone they do not know who is just starting a blog or Buzzfeed. I learned a lot about how to network and find out different ways to promote my three genres although I had to bring my personal accounts into the project it was a way that helped me creatively expand my genres beyond just my classmates and circle of friends.
My original community for this project residing from my last project completely changed. I had a lot of business and economic related people look over my research paper and I interviewed them on the topics I was interested in regarding the money aspect of Netflix and for this project it switched more to the outside viewers opinions and reactions to what goes on with Netflix shows and movies. I got a really good reaction through the grapevine; although it wasn’t extremely eventful I received some re-blogs, likes and followers on my Tumblr account as well as my posts on Facebook with my post about the different genres. My opinion changed as I read more and more from what people my age thought about Netflix. Although almost everyone loves it there are a lot of negative comments online regarding the quality of the shows as well as the backlash from deleting fan favorites from the site. I like both audiences I reached out to but the college age community was easier to relate to as a Netflix user myself knowing nothing about the “ins” of Netflix before my projects. I relate to both communities.
Composing this project was entertaining and easier than project two due to me being more tech-savvy and knowing how to use these forms of social media and how to get my message out there with a reaction in response. Creating the poster and Tumblr were fun because I used easy systems to create them to get the exact look I wanted them to be. I enjoyed creating the Buzzfeed list because I have already read so many other lists on Buzzfeed discussing other topics and I knew how to make it relatable and funny. The programs I used to compose the genres were user friendly and popular. Overall I learned a great deal regarding Netflix and the different genres I presented. I also enjoyed interacting with other people who felt the same way as me over the internet and get out of my comfort zone of just people I am comfortable with reading my work.
